Summer Research Fellowship for Undergraduates in the Microbial Sciences

The Microbial Sciences Initiative (MSI) at Harvard University invites fellowship applications from Harvard undergraduate students (rising Juniors and Seniors) who are planning to carry out research during the summer break in the lab of an MSI faculty associate.  Students should first contact an MSI faculty associate to assure acceptance into their laboratory during the summer. For a full list of MSI-associated faculty, see URL.

Funding:

MSI hopes to be able to award ten fellowships, each up to $4000, for the summer of 2010.  Students are also encouraged to apply to PRISE, and, if admitted, will be eligible for supplemental support of $2,000 (deadline for PRISE is also: Thursday Feb 18, 2010). Students are encouraged to apply for other sources of funding, and, if successful, will be eligible to receive supplemental funding from MSI up to an overall total of (and not to exceed) $4,000 per student fellow. Fellowships officially start June 7 and end August 13, 2010 to correspond with PRISE program dates, but some flexibility is acceptable. Application process:

The application is to be completed by the students in close collaboration their MSI faculty associate sponsor. Application forms with instructions, can be downloaded by clicking here. Applications must be sent electronically to Dr. Christy Herren (herren@fas.harvard.edu) by Thursday Feb 18, 2010 at 5:00 pm EST . Note that you must also register through Harvard Common Application for Research and Travel (CARAT) in addition to completing this application. For your application to be complete, your MSI faculty sponsor must send an email to Christy Herren indicating support for the application and project.  Please see the application for an application 'checklist'.

Timeline:

Awards will be announced no later than Thursday, March 18, 2010.  Students must be prepared to commit to the fellowship in writing by Thursday, March 25, 2010 to secure a position for summer 2010. Fellowships officially start June 7 and end August 13, 2010, but some flexibility is acceptable.
